The name "Gloverall" is synonymous to dufflecoats. Historically acclaimed for it´s unmatchable cut and the quality of it´s Outerwear collection for men, women and children, Gloverall started it´s duffle production more than 50 years ago in a LOndon factory near Saint Paul´s cathedral.
In 1951, Harold and Freda Morris, who were specialised in the retailling of coton, leather and plastic material, were contacted by the Department of Defense to help them get rid of their World War two surplus. Mr. Morris then conceived the "Gloverall" brand name.
The Morris family having obtained great success in the selling of army duffle surplus and the stocks dwindling, in 1954 they decided to produce their own coat, transforming the military duffle into a garment altogether chic and unique in the world. Their eldest song being a master tailor, he borrows the original by the rule characteristics of the British Army and achieves their version of the duffle by improving form and comfort. The result is a unique high quality garment that can be worn as a practical and hard-wearing coat as much as a fashionable cloth.
The original jute rope tie and wooden buttons are replaced with high quality leather attaches and buttons made of real horn. Flaps are added on the big pockets still large enough to house one´s hand. The coat interior is made to satisfy needs of refinement with the designing of a double lined tissu (2 pieces of woved together fabric for protection and warmth): the quality of the wool tissu and the design prove impeccable.
In 1956, new cuts are added to the range following heavy demand from elegant ladies. After that a children´s dufflecoat with practical qualities is worked up, adding to the range of schoolboy wear.
The Northamptoshire factory was opened in 1964, where some of the first stagehands are still present. The coats are made in England using the best components. This year´s collection are refocused on the basic products with aim to revise all the fabrics so to cive a clear definition between qualities.
In 1968, Gloverall opens offices in New York. 70% of Gloverall sales are exported to over 40 countries in the world. In 1986, their international reputation is achieved when the British League of Outerwear Customer Awareness puts Gloverall in its pages amongst the 512 listed classics.
