CLOTHING DESIGNED TO EVOLVE WITH TIME
Good On is a Japanese brand recognized for the quality of its basics, particularly its t-shirts. Behind their appearance hides a real work around cotton, manufacturing and dyeing to create resistant clothes which acquire a patina over time. In this guide, Royalcheese explains everything you need to know, from cotton selection and care to its iconic dyeing techniques and sizing details.
ROBUST CONSTRUCTION DESIGNED TO LAST
The dyeing technique used contributes to the unique character of each piece, while requiring some maintenance precautions. Over time, the color can naturally change and fade, particularly in the case of a pigment dye. To best preserve the appearance of the garment, it is recommended to wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent. In the machine, the use of a net and a delicate program is recommended.
This manufacturing method also requires solid, high-quality manufacturing. During the different stages of dyeing, washing and drying, clothes are subjected to significant stress: they are notably stretched, twisted and rubbed, exerting strong tension on the fibers, seams and colors. The products are thus designed to demonstrate great robustness and resist these successive treatments, demonstrating the care taken in their manufacturing and their durability.
Certain precautions also allow the color and material to be preserved over the long term. Prolonged exposure to UV rays or air conditioning can alter the appearance of the fabric. Upon contact with perspiration or humidity, color transfer to other clothing may also occur. In the event of a stain, it is advisable to intervene quickly by gently patting the area with a damp cloth, without rubbing.
Stains from oil, alcohol, fruit juice, soft drinks, soap or laundry detergent should be treated immediately. Even when they seem invisible, they can reappear or cause discoloration of the fabric. The use of wipes is not recommended, as some may contain chemical agents likely to alter the material or its color.
The American cotton used for manufacturing has particularly interesting properties for everyday use. Naturally breathable, its fibers absorb moisture and promote its evacuation when it is hot, thus contributing to the comfort of the garment. In cold weather, the spaces between the fibers allow a layer of air to be retained and help retain heat. Cotton also generates very little static electricity and supports ironing well.
DYEING TECHNIQUES THAT BRING GARMENT TO LIFE
The dyeing method plays an essential role in the appearance, feel and, above all, the evolution of the garment over time.
Pigment dyeing uses pigments made up of relatively large particles, attached to the surface of the fabric using a binder. The color remains mainly on the surface. The friction associated with wearing the garment and successive washes will therefore gradually fade the color. Far from being a defect, this evolution is an integral part of the process: the more the garment is worn, the more its color takes on a patina and develops its own nuances. Each piece thus gradually acquires a unique appearance.
Reactive dyeing works differently. The color attaches directly to the fibers through a chemical reaction. The fine dye particles penetrate the heart of the fabric, allowing deep and vibrant colors to be obtained. The discoloration caused by washing is much more gradual.
Yarn dyeing consists of coloring the threads before they are even knitted to form the garment. This method limits discoloration while maintaining a particularly soft and natural finish.
Dyeing processes may result in slight variations in color, texture or dimensions from piece to piece. In particular, darker colors may have a slightly firmer feel, while lighter shades tend to offer a softer finish, allowing more of the natural texture of the fabric to shine through.
Concerning the cut, the clothes follow a Japanese size standard and are designed with a unisex spirit. As the size is generally smaller than European standards, it is advisable to choose one size larger than your usual size for greater comfort.
Over time it is worn and washed, the material will gradually soften and become more comfortable, while maintaining its fit. The garment thus evolves with its owner: the more it is worn, the more personal its touch, its color and its patina become.
Beyond the quality of their manufacturing, these clothes are designed to stand the test of time and evolve with those who wear them. With proper care, each piece shapes itself over time, developing its own unique look and feel. A garment designed to last, to develop a patina and to become, over the years, truly unique.
